Types of Research (Qualitative Research)

Qualitative Research

Qualitative research is a form of research based on opinions and preferences from a variety of people. It is more someone's personal opinion on a matter or an issues than it is factual information. When carrying out qualitative research you are going to need to ask a broad audience and ensure the demographic of the people you ask is varied. In the media industry qualitative research is used almost all of the time. When a new media product like a film or a computer game comes out, qualitative research can be used to get feedback from a particular audience. The feedback can be both negative and positive and help that media product to be improved.

My own example of qualitative research

The website was generally easy to navigate through it, the design of the site was nice and clean. The majority of the graphics and colours presented on the website are bright and stand out. All of the content on the website was easy to understand, the website swayed me to become a member.

The graphics and colours on the website are extremely bright which I did not enjoy. It distracted me from the content of the website which wasn’t very helpful anyway. I found it hard to navigate myself around the site and got confused with links I was clicking on. I highly doubt I will be reusing this website.

I really enjoyed the design of the website. However, the layout was slightly confusing for me to use. Some elements that the website had where very strong but I still prefer other social networking sites to this one. I think if I spent more time on the website I could be persuaded to use it more as it did have some good features.

Film review

A film review is something an individual will post on a website if they receive permission to do so. They will rate the film out of 5, 1 star being the lowest and 5 stars being the highest. The person rating the review will explain the plot and give an overall summary of the film. They will then either praise it or criticise the film and give there reason why. Film reviews are extremely useful to the individuals who created the movie. It allows them to look back on what they produced and see where they want which leaves room for improvement.

Below is an example of a film review written by mike McCahill. the film review is posted on the guardian newspaper website. he writes about his personal outlook on the film.

I had another look on the guardian website and found that the hunger games catching fire was the most spoken about review, The review was written by Mark Kermode. He spoke about the quality of the film and compared it to some other top quality films

After taking two pieces of text that summaries two films on the guardian website I now found another website called empire online. I searched up the most recent talked about disney film which was frozen, This film had been getting very good feedback from individuals who has watched it so I wanted to see a professional take on it. The film frozen was reviewed by Helen O,Hara and displayed on the empire online website for viewers to see and comment there feedback on the review. Giving viewers the opportunity to comment on reviews is useful to the individual who made the film as they are receiving back criticism which they can improve on, she gave it 3 stars which is average. Considering it is a film targeted at children I would say this is a respectable review as it is not for people in her age range.

Game Review

Game review - attitudes to media products

Above is an example of three different feedback reviews on a media product. This shows three different individuals attitude to media products. As you can see the feedback is varied from Very negative To extremely good.

Assassins Creed - Attitudes to media products

Below is a forum that ubisoft have created to receive responses on their new missions and style of missions that they have included in their new game. There are also some responses shown on how some of ubisoft's game players have replied.

These where the responses of some consumers of the game

As you can see from the responses they where both positive and negative. The consumers responded about the game as well as commenting on ubisoft as a company.

Responses to news coverage

I looked at a recent issue that has occurred about a drama on the BBC called Jamaica inn. There was a recent uproar from viewers claiming that they couldn't here some of the lines that one of the characters was saying. There was over 2000 complaints that came in on this issue, the guardian have recently written an article and covered this issue. Below is some screenshots of the article it self as well as some responses to this news coverage.

Below is the article explaining what the complaints where about, how many people made the complaints and what BBC said they would do to fix the problem.

The paragraph below is a response from an audience member of the TV programme, the response that they have written is a negative response.

Below is the link to the article I had a look at.

Fanzine Website

This is an example of a fanzine website, a fanzine website is a website dedicated to a celebrity or a famous individual. A fanzine website is created by a fan of that individual. the website will have pictures videos and the latest news of a celebrity etc.

http://www.johnnycashfanzine.com/index.html

Above is a basic fanzine created by one person who has dedicated there page to Johnny cash. I looked further into fanzine websites to find a more advanced one. I came across a fanzine website called mud kiss which I could see was more advanced with a number of individuals working on the website. This website did not only dedicate it to one person they also provided music and book reviews along with a photography page. The photography page has pictures of celebrities and advertisers the photographers talents.

Here are some images of the mud kiss website, as you can see the way there website is layed out is much more advanced, the information and links they have on the website are also more detailed and give consumers browsing the website more to look at.

Mudkiss as the most advanced and professional fanzine website I have come across so far.  As it says in the description above the team members who take part in the website are all of different levels, some being advanced and some being lower level.

Responses to advertising campaigns

On the 9th of November the new John lewis advert had been released on TV for an audience to see. It received an immediate fantastic response from the majority of the viewers who had watched it.

This is a small section from the article showing the facts and statistics.

The advert was called the bear and the hare, 23600 is the number of followers on numerous different social media sights that the company had gained due to this advertisement.

Discussion

A discussion can be amongst people or one person posting on an article etc. I had a look at a website called Screenrant. The episode being reviewed is called patience is a vertue, an individual has posted an article about the episode itself.

This is a small section from the game of thrones article

Once the article was posted, a handful of individuals commented with their opinions with ended up in a discussion.

This is one of the responses that someone had wrote about game of thrones in reference to the article. There is also the option to reply.

This a responses to one of the comments that a viewer had written
